Najwa Parkins and the After Hours Trio is a Philadelphia-based jazz quartet comprised of Najwa Parkins on vocals and band leading, Tal Shtuhl on tenor saxophone and various woodwinds (& sometimes dance), Dan Hanrahan on guitar, and Justin Sekelewski on bass. The band members, who met while studying music at the Temple University Boyer College of Music and Dance, work together to produce unique arrangements of both familiar and lesser known standards, in addition to playing original music, written by Najwa. Since 2009, the group has been actively performing at various public and private venues including, but not limited to, The Deer Head Inn, The Barnes Foundation, The COTA Jazz Festival, and The Lancaster Avenue Jazz Festival, as well as giving concerts presented by The New Brunswick Jazz Project and the Jazz Bridge Neighborhood Concert Series. We, the people of Najwa Parkins and the After Hours Trio, enjoy "swinging jazz", coffee, and the HBO series, Game of Thrones (with the exception of Dan who, smartly, has not yet hopped on the GOT bandwagon).
" Najwa Parkins is not only a very talented vocalist/musician, but she is to be admired for her devotion to excellence. While working with her, the first thing I was struck by was the maturity in her interpretations of The Great American Songbook. She has obviously done her homework. Oh, and she swings, too."
“Najwa Parkins has long been an integral part of our Pocono musical family. She recorded on our newest CD, "Celebration 2" as a player and singer. And when we need to help a community member she is always there. A great musician and stalwart citizen. I sleep a little better knowing she is on the cutting edge of our musical future."
"Najwa is a refreshing new voice --a little smooth, a little edgy and a whole lotta smoky-she brings her own special take to familiar jazz standards. With sweetness...and sass Ms Parkins also delivers wonderfully crafted, original tunes that are smart, insightful and sometimes even amusing."
