A Very Special Evening with the DIVA Orchestra – Proceeds to Benefit Rick Chamberlain Memorial COTA Scholarship Fund

On May 23rd, 2015 the world-class DIVA Jazz Orchestra will join forces with COTA and The Deer Head Inn for a special evening of music to benefit The Rick Chamberlain Memorial COTA Scholarship Fund.

DIVA

Headed by drummer Sherrie Maricle, DIVA exudes the excitement and force found in the tradition of the historic big bands but with an eye towards today’s progressive sound of originality and verve. For the past 23 years DIVA has performed all over the world playing contemporary, mainstream big band jazz composed and arranged to fit the individual personalities and styles of the musicians themselves. The audience can expect to hear a high-energy, super-swingin’ performance packed with unique improvisation, spontaneity and fun.

In addition to performing at many of the world’s most prestigious music venues and festivals, DIVA was recently featured in extended runs of Maurice Hines’s new Broadway-bound show Tappin Through Life. The band has also made several notable television and film appearances including performing the soundtrack for the 2014 NBC/Macy’s Firework Spectacular, a feature in the award-winning documentary film, The Girls in the Band, multiple appearances on CNN Arts Break, a dedicated segment on CBS Sunday Morning and musical features as part of The Kennedy Center’s 25th Anniversary Special, the Japanese television network NHK, and Metropol TV in Germany. Additionally DIVA has joyfully shared the stage with Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams, Diane Schuur, Carmen Bradford,  Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rosemary Clooney, Ann Hampton Callaway, Clark Terry and Dave Brubeck, to name a few.

DIVA has created a very impressive series of recordings, most recent the critically-acclaimed A Swingin’ Life, featuring Grammy Award winner Nancy Wilson and the soulful Marlena Shaw. Other DIVA recordings include: Johnny Mandel: The Man and his Music, recorded live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and conducted by Mandel himself;  Live From Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, featuring supremely swinging vocalist Carmen Bradford (2008); TNT – Tommy Newsom Tribute, a compilation of charts the late Mr. Newsom arranged exclusively for DIVA (2005); Live in Concert (2002); I Believe in You (1999); Leave It To DIVA (1997); and Something’s Coming (1995)

Sherrie and Rick met over 20 years ago via their professional association with The New York Pops, but in 2000 when she bought her house in Marshall’s Creek, she realized the profound and positive impact Rick Chamberlain had on everything musical in our community and beyond. From being a stellar performer in both classical and jazz music, to being an extraordinary educator and a passionate, creative force for musical good, his work and genuine love of music made our community and the world a much better place. The Rick Chamberlain Memorial COTA Scholarship Fund is one of the ways we will keep his “joie-de-jazz” and musical mission “swingin’ forward.

The music is 7 to 11 with sets at 7pm; 8:30pm and 10pm. Tickets are $25 and the first 100 people receive a FREE DIVA Jazz Orchestra CD.
